Malaria has proved for centuries to be evasive and resistant to drugs. In this video, HealthMaker Joe DeRisi, PhD explains how scientists endeavor to stay ahead of the parasite and develop new treatments.
Malaria is been one of the toughest problems to solve in basic science for decades if not a century now. There is still no vaccine with an operation impact and really our only result for combating malaria is to control the mosquito, the vector of the disease or, to develop new or make use serve old medicinal against the disease and so my lab's mission has been to understand more about the basic biology of the parasite and at the same time, try to push forward new development of chemotherapeutic agents against malaria.
Joe DeRisi, PhD, is a pioneer in genetic research techniques to understand the behavior of malaria and further prevention and treatment. He discusses the ethical issues of biomedical and genetic research.
