How can we get people engaged in their own health?
Getting patients engaged in their own health is possible, but requires total dedication from doctors and patients, says HealthMaker Herbert Pardes, MD. In this video, he discusses the behavior change we need in order to see improvement.

Can you get people to change at all? Well, look at the difference in smoking today as opposed to some years ago. [MUSIC PLAYING]
That's a central question, beautiful question, you know. And it's formidable.
You're talking about behavior change, and how do you influence somebody to modify something they're used to?
Often somebody giving them some new advice goes on deaf ears. [INAUDIBLE] the frequency of inattention to doctor's advice
is very widespread. And I would say as with any other thing, you've gotta go repeatedly at them.
You know, the old adage is in order to get somebody to push their seat belt together, it takes about 14 times when which they're told to do that.
It's gotta be consistent, it's gotta be omnipresent, and I think they're seeing that. Can you get people to change at all?
Well, look at the difference in smoking today as opposed to some years ago. And I would say there's trends happening, which are valuable.
It doesn't happen right away. You have to realize the heterogeneous nature of the patient population, and you've
got to talk in terms that people understand and also find the ways to engage them to do something. That's basically what people who do psychotherapy do,
and behavior change is what we need. It's needed in terms of diet, exercise, all the good things that you and I know.
So I guess the question is can we do it. Yes, but we've got to have total dedication to it. And doctors have to work, and providers-- not only doctors--
have to work to engage their patients. There are other things that are helping. There's more attention in the way
we evaluate providers in terms of their relationship to patients. So when you say something like patient satisfaction
is measured, if a patient likes the doctor or the nurse or the provider, they often are more inclined to do what they want than if they see them
as a kind of emotionally dead kind of neutral individual. [LOGO SOUND]
