As a dermatologist, I see my patients
with psoriasis at least twice yearly. Once yearly, I perform a full head to toe skin cancer screening exam
to make sure that there's nothing concerning on their skin from a skin cancer standpoint. This is because there are certain medications
that we use to treat psoriasis that can actually increase your risk of skin cancer. Also, depending on the severity of their psoriasis,
I may see them more frequently-- such as every three months-- if they're on an oral or systemic medication in order to review their blood work.
I also recommend my psoriasis patients to actually see their primary care doctor at least once a year. There are certain diseases that are associated with psoriasis
such as heart disease, obesity, diabetes, liver disease, that your primary care doctor really
should be screening for. When you see your primary care doctor, they should be performing a head to toe, full body scan examination.
Also, a routine medical history and annual blood work to test and to screen for any of these conditions.
