Supermarket Savvy: Decoding PLU Labels on Fruits and Veggies

Hi, I'm Dr. Oz, and and here's a smart tip to remember the next time you go to the supermarket. If you do most of your shopping in the produce section that's great lots of fruits and vegetables should be the cornerstone of your diet, and you can play detective to find the healthiest fruits and veggies.

Just take a look at the numbers and a little sticker with the price look up code, it's also called the PLU. Here's how to crack the code. A four-digit PLU code starting with number 4 means that the produce was conventionally grown, so is likely to have been exposed to pesticides, but it's not been genetically modified.

If 5 is your code, beginning with the number 9 means it's organic, no pesticide and no GMO. A five digit PLU that starts with an 8 means that the food or vegetable has been genetically modified. You can even make a game of it and ask your kids to help you hunt down a variety of colorful fruits and veggies with PLU codes that start with 9, and there's an extra benefit.
