What is an impacted wisdom tooth?

An impacted wisdom tooth cannot break through the surface of the gums due to a number of restrictions. These restrictions may include bone positioning, the density of other teeth, or the condition of the surrounding gums. During its growth, a tooth trying to emerge in an overcrowded mouth can become inhibited from erupting and eventually lose its capacity to erupt.
