How do medications treat stage 4 rectal cancer?

Chemotherapy medication is used to treat advanced stages of rectal cancer. Radiation x-rays that target cancer cells are usually used in conjunction with chemotherapy. These treatments can treat cancer that is unable to be surgically removed. Sometimes, chemotherapy medication can target cancer in a specific area. If rectal cancer has spread to the liver and no where else, chemotherapy can be injected into an artery that carries blood to the liver.
