Should I avoid other smokers if I'm trying to quit?

Quitting smoking is a difficult but admirable task.  It is the single most helpful thing you can do to improve your health. When attempting to quit, it is wise to stay away from any situation that may tempt you to have "just one more cigarette." This includes avoiding friends, family, or co-workers while they are smoking.  This can be difficult, as it was likely just as much of a chance to spend time with friends as it was a smoke break.  However, it is important to explain to them that you are trying to quit, and ask them to support you by not encouraging you to smoke with them.  Who knows? Your attempt to stop smoking may motivate them to stop smoking as well.

If your friends and/or family smoke then you need to ask them to avoid smoking around you.  In addition, you need to ask them not to offer you any cigarettes.  If they cannot do this then you need to avoid them until you are smoke-free.
You should limit contact with smokers if you're trying to quit. If they light up around you, walk away. Avoid social events as well sa bars or other places where you might be tempted to smoke. Let friends, family and coworkers know that you've quit, and ask for their encouragement.

There's nothing worse then a having to deal with a spoiler when you are trying to quit smoking. They're out there, everywhere. The friend that waves them in your face. The coworkers who talk trash when you stay behind during smoke breaks. It's something you'll have to face at some point or another, and you need to drum up the courage and strength to deal with it.

Ask people to avoid smoking around you when possible. You don't mean to be rude, but you're trying to save your own life. Explain to any spoilers in your family that you need everyone's support while you embark on this difficult journey. If they must smoke, they need to do it elsewhere. If they refuse, you must walk away while they puff. Don't let someone else's negativity draw you back to cigarettes.
