Can smoking cause pulmonary fibrosis?

The majority of the time, the cause of pulmonary fibrosis is unknown, so it would not be accurate to say that smoking can cause the disease. However, smoking is a significant risk factor for pulmonary fibrosis. People who smoke or who used to smoke develop idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis far more often than people who have never smoked.
