How does pleurisy affect the body?

Pleurisy affects the tissues that line your lungs and chest cavity called the pleura. The pleura cover the outside of the lungs and the inside of the chest wall, and a small amount of fluid between the tissue membranes keeps them from scraping against each other. When the pleura become inflamed from any of the many conditions that may lead to pleurisy, such as tuberculosis or lung cancer, they scrape against each other, which causes the main symptom of the condition, chest pain.
