Peritoneal diseases all affect the body differently. However, many of them present with excess fluid in the peritoneal cavity. If this is the case, a person has ascites, a build up of peritoneal fluid. When this happens, it is important to adopt a low-salt diet until the ascites has been fully treated. Along with other treatment, this will help make sure fluid does not continue to build. People on dialysis may sometimes develop peritonitis, an infection of the peritoneal cavity. With this, it is generally recommended to stop peritoneal dialysis treatment and seek a different kind of dialysis either temporarily or permanently.
