How can papaya help reduce pain from overexertion?

Ms. Ashley Koff, RD
Nutrition & Dietetics
Papaya contains an enzyme called papain that is so potent at fighting pain that doctors have isolated it to use as injections for those suffering from back pain. Today this enzyme is one of the most popular supplements being sold over the counter to address back and body pain due to overexertion. However, when we take the supplement versus eating the fruit (1 cup of organic papaya is a serving), we miss out on the helpful pain-fighting antioxidants found in its orange flesh. So stock papaya in your fridge or freezer and add it to salads or smoothies, or even make it into a salsa to enjoy food-based pain relief.
