Complications with osteoporosis are usually associated with fractures that result from having weak bones. Sometimes a small fall will break a hip or wrist and sometimes vertebrae will compress and fracture without even a fall. However a bone fractures, bones often heal slowly when you have osteoporosis. Additionally, if surgery is necessary there can be surgery-related complications.
TThe most obvious complication of osteoporosis is breaking bones. If the vertebrae in the spine break, this can cause loss of height, difficulty walking, and chronic pain. If a weight bearing bone such as the hip breaks, there is a high risk of less ability to move around independently. Immobility leads to many other health problems.
Osteoporosis can have complications. The most common is a bone fracture, usually of the hip, wrist and spine. Impaired mobility due to a fracture can greatly affect quality and duration of life, especially in the elderly. Prevention is key!
