When should I call the orthodontist after my child gets a wire retainer?

Your orthodontist may follow up with your child for a period of time after your child gets a wire dental retainer. At any point, though, if your child feels that a piece of the cement might have chipped off or there are sharp edges from the wire or glue, call your orthodontist. You also want to make sure the retainer fits properly on your child's teeth so they don’t shift position.

The purpose of a retainer is to keep your child's teeth straight after orthdontic treatment. If you feel that your child's teeth are moving where they shouldn't, they are getting a sore because of their retainer, or if their retainer seems broken or out of adjustment, you should call the orthodontist right away. You child may need to have his retainer adjusted or replaced.
