A dentist or doctor can diagnose thrush, or oral candidiasis. It can be identified by red or white patches inside the mouth. It may affect the tongue, inside of the cheeks, and/or back of the throat. It causes a burning feeling and may make it difficult to swallow. Thrush has been known to occur in diabetics because of higher than normal blood sugar levels. Thrush may occur if there is a decreased flow of saliva, which allows fungus to grow. Thrush can also develop as an adverse effect of taking antibiotics. This occurs because the antibiotics kill the good bacteria that keep your mouth healthy. Thrush may also occur in those with dentures or in those who smoke. Thrush usually resolves by taking a prescribed antifungal medication.
