Kroc was a milkshake-machine salesman who helped turn McDonald's into a national hamburger franchise. McDonald's started as a few restaurants in California and Arizona owned by brothers Maurice and Richard McDonald. Kroc became impressed with their operation after they bought the milkshake machines he sold and suggested they broaden their business. The three became partners and at age 52, Kroc began expanding the brand. Seven years later, he became the sole owner of a franchise that sold more than a billion hamburgers by 1963.
