What kind of complications can result from a nerve block injection?

Donna Hill Howes, RN
Family Practitioner

Complications from nerve block therapy are rare. But they can be caused by the drugs or damage from the needle. Overdoses of local pain-relievers can damage nerves or cause seizures or heart-related problems. High doses of corticosteroids can affect the adrenal glands or raise blood sugar in people with diabetes. Injection sites may become infected. A needle may accidentally injure a nerve, artery, or other nearby tissue or organ.
