How can I prevent lupus?

At this time, it's not possible to prevent systemic lupus erythematous (SLE). Scientists don't yet know what causes SLE, and it appears that a multitude of factors play a role in disease development and progression. Based on studies of monozygotic twins and families of affected individuals, there is likely a genetic component. However, disease progression is also subject to hormonal, immunological and environmental factors.

No specific cause for lupus has been found, so there is no known way to prevent the onset of the disease. Doctors believe the disease is tied to genetics and triggered by one's environment. There may be multiple genes that determine a person's likelihood of contracting the disease. Researchers are trying to discover the exact genes involved in hopes of someday curing the illness or preventing it altogether.
