Farmer’s lung is a term for an allergy to certain molds that are found in hay, and is the most common form of hypersensitivity pneumonitis. A serious illness, it usually causes shortness of breath and a cough. It can cause pulmonary edema, which requires the patient to go to the emergency room. Over time, it can cause scouring of the lungs, called lung fibrosis.
Farmer's lung is the most common form of hypersensitivity pneumonitis. Farm workers are exposed to a variety of mists, pesticides, and dust particles that can cause an allergic reaction. Moldy dust from hay, barley, straw, or other grains is a common irritant that also affects farmers.
