How can an incisional hernia be prevented?

The best way to prevent an incisional hernia is by allowing your surgery to heal fully. This often takes six to eight weeks, depending on the type and size of your surgery. While you are healing, you should limit your lifting of anything to less than 10 pounds and stay away from activities that cause you to strain your abdominal (belly) muscles such as bending over for long periods of time, coughing and even constipation. Smoking, diabetes and medications such as prednisone also slow the body’s healing process. Talk with your doctor about how to improve these conditions to help prevent developing a hernia.
