answer

You may travel by car as a passenger, but you may not drive a car until you visit your surgeon after surgery. During this checkup, usually three to six weeks after surgery, your healthcare provider must assess the stability of your breastbone, also known as your sternum, before any driving activity can take place.

Although a seatbelt may cause you some discomfort, it is still important for you to buckle up. Place a pillow between your chest and the seatbelt for extra cushion. If there is an air bag on the passenger side of the car, consider sitting in the back until your doctor says it is okay to sit in the front.
