What should I know about a toothpaste that contains triclosan?

Triclosan is an ingredient added to many products, including toothpaste, to fight bacteria. Research shows that when included in toothpaste, triclosan helps prevent gingivitis (gum disease).

Some animal studies have shown that triclosan can alter hormone regulation, but animal studies don't always apply to humans. Other studies have shown that triclosan may make bacteria resistant to antibiotics. Triclosan is not currently known to be hazardous to humans.
