How does gaining weight affect aging?

Extra weight affects all of our systems. It accelerates the wear on our bodies and causes us to have to recover from our day more slowly. For example, 10 extra pounds of fat causes the development of 70 miles of additional blood vessels to form. Overtime, that increased resistance will strain the heart more. That extra weight causes increased wear on the whole skeleton. It is safe to assume that no part of the body does better with being overweight and the usual inactivity that goes with it. As we age, this is unneeded wear for our bodies to recover from.

Strong evidence shows that weight gain between the ages of eighteen (for women) or twenty-one (for men) and forty is particularly dangerous. Weight gain in your early to mid-adult years can make your RealAge (physiologic age) one half to one year older for every 10 percent gain in body mass index. Furthermore, every 10 percent increase in relative weight is associated with a 6.5-millimeter rise in systolic blood pressure, and high blood pressure is one of the major factors affecting aging.
