Is there a cure for gallstones?

There are treatments for gallstones. Ursodiol, or ursodeoxycholic acid, can be taken by mouth to dissolve gallstones, but the treatment may take as long as two years for large stones, and half of patients develop gallstones again within five years. Surgery is usually preferred if gallstones must be removed. Gallstones that do not cause symptoms do not require treatment. However, removing the gallbladder surgically will prevent future gallstones from forming.
