What causes eye pain?

Eye pain has many possible causes, including:
  • Blepharitis, or inflammation/infection of the eyelid
  • Conjunctivitis (pinkeye), or inflammation of the conjunctiva
  • Corneal abrasions from trauma, corneal infections or foreign bodies
  • Acute angle glaucoma, which can cause sudden, severe eye pain
  • Sinusitis, which can create pressure behind the eyes
  • Styes on the eyelids
Some causes of eye pain are relatively benign, while others require medical attention.
