What is cholecystitis?

Cholecystitis means inflammation or swelling of the gallbladder, the organ located at the base of your liver. The swelling often occurs when a gallstone -- a hard pebble-like deposit -- blocks the tube-like duct leading out of the gallbladder.
Cholecystitis can cause moderate to severe pain in the upper right abdomen, fever, chills, vomiting, nausea, reflux, bloating and tenderness along your right ribcage. See your doctor if you experience these symptoms.
