How should I care for someone with viral gastrointestinal infections?

The priority of caring for someone, especially a child, with viral gastroenteritis is to make sure they stay hydrated. Make sure that the person is getting plenty of rest and drinking enough fluids throughout the day. For children, the fluids should not be water but rather a rehydration solution (Pedialyte for example). This is because children with the disease don't absorb water as efficiently as adults. Help the person to gradually reintroduce solid foods as their symptoms calm down, staying away from rich, fatty foods and products like alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine until they are feeling back to normal.
