How do dental implants help edentulism?

Dental implants are permanent dentures that are anchored into your jaw bone. Dental implants can help you chew foods you would otherwise avoid with endentulism and have more confidence about your smile and appearance.

Dental implants may not always be the best option. Some individuals cannot receive dental implants because of bone deterioration in the jaw resulting from osteoporosis or periodontal disease. With little to anchor the implants into, doctors cannot make your dental implants permanent. Additionally, even dental implants have their side effects and you should still see a dentist if you have them. Poor dental care of dental implants leads to symptoms like pain, ulcers, gingivitis, yeast infection, and irritation.

Dental implants can predictably replace the function of lost teeth. If a patient has a full denture, as little as 2 implants can anchor the denture to give it more stability when chewing and talking.

Implants help preserve the bony structures of the jaws and also keep the muscles of the face from atrophying due to inability to chew well. Patients who replace missing teeth in the back of the mouth get an automatic face lift once they start chewing properly again.
