There are no common side effects when topical fluorides are used as prescribed. If too much toothpaste is used, it could make your mouth and tongue sore. In young children, if small amounts of fluoride toothpaste are swallowed every day over a long period, it may cause light or dark spots or cracks in their teeth, called dental fluorosis.
Swallowing an excessive amount of fluoride toothpaste at one time can cause intestinal upset (stomach ache, cramps, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea) and drooling, which can last for 24 hours. In mild cases, the calcium in milk may counteract the effect of the fluoride and relieve these symptoms; but for severe cases where large amounts were consumed, seek medical help.
