Is there a difference between genders when it comes to crying?

Researchers believe boys and girls cry at about the same rates until they reach adolescence. As testosterone levels ramp up in boys, their amount of crying plummets. As estrogen levels rise in girls, however, their crying increases. This is particularly interesting because of the link between the protein prolactin and breast milk production, which, of course, only happens in women.

That connection may explain why women cry roughly four times as much as men, theorizes biochemist and researcher William Frey and his co-author Muriel Langseth, who wrote 'Crying: The Mystery of Tears.'
