What is a transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT)?

This means that you will be placed under anesthesia, then your doctor will place a scope into the bladder to examine the bladder.  Once the bladder and prostate are thoroughly examined, an instrument is introduced into the scope to shave off (resect) all visible bladder tumors.

The goal is to remove all the tumor that is visible (for cure), and get a sample of the bladder wall muscle below the tumor (for staging) in order to determine what is the best treatment option for your tumor.  At the end of the procedure, your doctor may instill a chemotherapy drug in the bladder temporarily to help prevent recurrence, and you may have a catheter in the bladder when you awake from anesthesia.
