Tracheitis may cause intercostal retractions (the pulling in of the muscles in the rib area) as a child breathes. In addition to having difficulty breathing, children with tracheitis have a high fever and deep cough. If the trachea swells enough to obstruct the airway, immediate medical attention is required.
