Can I use lamivudine if I am breastfeeding?

Lamivudine (Epivir) is not recommended for women who are breastfeeding. This medication treats human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which damages and kills immune system cells and can lead to acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Lamivudine does not cure or prevent HIV or AIDS.

Note that this medication is not the same thing as Epivir-HBV, which contains a lower dose of lamivudine and treats hepatitis B, a serious liver infection.
