Halcinonide ointment is a prescription medication that is used to reduce the itching, swelling, redness and irritation caused by certain skin conditions. Halcinonide ointment may be used for dermatitis, eczema, allergies and other rashes. Halcinonide ointment is a type of medication called a topical corticosteroid, and it helps reduce inflammation in the skin. To use halcinonide ointment, wash and dry the affected area of skin. Spread a thin film of halcinonide ointment to the affected area and rub it in. Usually it should be applied two or three times a day, or as directed by your doctor. The affected area should not be covered with a bandage or wrap unless your doctor tells you to do so. Use halcinonide ointment exactly as prescribed by your doctor; using it for longer than recommended may increase the risk for serious side effects. Make sure you do not get halcinonide ointment in or near the eyes, nose or mouth. If it does get in those areas, rinse with lots of water. Halcinonide is the generic name for the active ingredient used in the brand-name medication Halog Ointment. Talk to your doctor to determine whether halcinonide ointment with emollients is right for you.
