How can I prevent or reduce the appearance of scars after surgery or injury? Scarring after surgery or injury remains
a significant, unmet need in medicine. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of proven therapies
to reduce or prevent scars. However, a few tips will help. Number one, the technique used to close an incision
has a great bearing on the quality of the scar. As such, it's important to have cosmetic surgery, for example,
from people who are qualified to do it. Secondly, after an injury has occurred,
or an incision has been made, the only modality proven to improve scars over the long term is silicone sheeting or silicone gel.
This can be bought at pharmacies or ordered online and must be worn from 12 to 24 hours a day for several months
in order to have an effect. However, using a good quality sunblock can reduce pigmentation of scars and cause
them to fade more quickly. If you are planning surgery, or already have a scar that you are not pleased with,
talk to your doctor beforehand about possible remedies for the scar as well as additional ways
