Avoiding a hangover starts the night before, when you are drinking. You never really want to have alcohol without water next to it. You need the water to flush it through your system. That's pretty simple. But the alcohol you drink should be the color of water, ideally, as well. Darker alcohols contain more congeners, which are what cause hangovers.

If you wake up with a hangover, eat something, especially eggs. Eggs are effective because the eggs, in their yolk, have something called N-acetyl-cysteine. It is a way of giving your body antioxidants, and those antioxidants are critically important to your liver that's going to battle right now trying to cleanse all the junk that's left over.

Taking aspirin can help reduce the inflammation caused by drinking. A cup of Joe doesn't hurt either. Coffee's pretty effective, because alcohol is a depressant. Alcohol takes you down. Unfortunately, when you sleep after drinking alcohol, it's not good sleep. Alcohol just sort of gets you into a sleepy period, and you're depressed all night long. Coffee's a stimulant, so it gets you going again in the morning.

A healthier question about a hangover is why did you get one in the first place? Was this an isolated incident? Or, ask yourself what was going on that, even though you knew you should stop drinking at a certain point, you did not. Going back to bed after eating can often alleviate the symptoms, but if this is a frequent enough concern that you need to find a cure for a hangover, you should be looking at your consumption.

So if you drank too much on the weekend and feel like a train hit you the next morning, there are foods that can help you feel better and that may even prevent a hangover when eaten before.

Before you drink remember to eat a filling meal of healthy grains such as pasta, rice or quinoa and starchy vegetables such as potatoes and sweet potatoes. The food will absorb the alcohol.

Drink lots of water the day before and drink water or sodas between each alcoholic drink which slows the alcohol consumption.

Try consuming no more than one drink per hour which will lessen the effects of the alcohol.

While drinking, remember to eat as well. Nibbling on nuts or pretzels will absorb the alcohol.

Dark spirits leave you with more extreme symptoms than light spirits; rum, vodka and gin have lower hangover effects than brandy, champagne, bourbon, red wine or cognac.

Avoid mixing your alcohols. A great rhyme to remember is: “Liquor before beer, never fear. Beer before liquor, never sicker”!

Asparagus eaten just before you drink or with your meal may prevent a hangover. Its enzymes help to break down alcohol.

The next morning try clear broth to replace the salt and potassium lost through drinking.

Bananas help restore the body’s potassium levels and improve muscle function so you don’t feel shaky.

Honey has antioxidants and concentrated fructose that flushes out alcohol quickly.

    The best solution? Drink less!

Nux vomica is a natural remedy that works well for hangovers. You can get it in a 30c potency (strength) in any natural food store or online, for example from www.homeopathic.com. Take a couple of pellets every few hours to relieve your hangover.

Next, please consider how to avoid having a hangover in the future. You feel really sick after too much alcohol because your liver can’t process it all – and your liver is really important to your health! You can’t afford to damage your liver. Nux works because it helps clear toxins from the liver, and alcohol is a toxin.

So please use Nux once, but please don’t let it become a crutch that enables you to have more hangovers.

For more information about what Nux can do for you, see the “Make Friends with Nux Vomica” section of my book, A Healer In Every Home.
