    Dr. Mehmet Oz answered:
About 2 percent of the United States population is affected by fibromyalgia. That's about five million people. Think about it: That's as if every person in the great state of Colorado had fibromyalgia. Fibro is about seven times more common in women than men, and is more likely to develop in middle age and later. But men do get it, and so do some children.

But keep in mind that the numbers aren't perfect. Because it is hard to diagnose fibromyalgia, it is possible that some people with other conditions are classified as having fibro, so the actual numbers may be somewhat lower.

The percentage of the US population affected by fibromyalgia is approximately 2%. This involves about 5 million adults. While fibromyalgia affects men and women of any age, even in childhood, it generally affects women at midlife. Still, it is thought that men with fibromyalgia may not be talking with their doctors about their symptoms of deep muscle pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and depression. People with rheumatic disorders such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and lupus have a higher incidence of fibromyalgia.

According to the American College of Rheumatology, 3-5% of females and 0.5-1.6% of males are afflicted with fibromyalgia. However, actual prevalence is likely higher, because the ACR criteria are insensitive. Fibromyalgia most often affects fertile women aged 20-50 years.

It is suspected that 4% of the population worldwide has been effected by fibromyalgia. This has increased from 1%-2% over a decade ago. There is both a very severe form of fibromyalgia and what is called an intermediate state, so it is not an all or nothing condition.
