If you need short-term disability insurance, ask your supervisor or human resources representative about any available short-term disability insurance plans available through your employer. If your employer plan doesn't offer it, you can research individual plans with companies such as MetLife, Hartford Life, Lincoln Financial Group, Unum, and Sun Life Financial. Make sure you understand how much of your salary the insurance would pay and how long it takes for your benefits to kick in after the pregnancy. Most insurance companies have a one to 14-day wait before they start issuing disability payments. Short-term disability insurance usually lasts one to two years so make sure you supplement your personal insurance coverage with long-term disability insurance and emergency savings.
