A usual symptom of coma is that the eyes remain closed. In a prolonged coma state, if the coma lasts beyond a month, the eyes may open but the person remains unresponsive. Medical professionals label the state of unresponsiveness according to when and for how long the eyes open. If a person's eyes open after a long period of time, the physician may consider the condition a &vegetative state.
