HIROO TAKAYAMA: And the surgery is well tolerated when done by experienced hands. [MUSIC PLAYING]
The patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy sometimes require surgery.
One of the unique features of the hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is left ventricular outflow tract obstruction,
in which the thickened myocardium, thickened heart muscle, obstructs the outlet of the heart.
This condition occurs about approximately 70% of the patients.
When this happens, initially, medication will be tried by the cardiologist
to relieve the obstruction and to relieve your symptoms. If your symptoms continues, surgery will be indicated.
In the surgery, which is called septal myectomy, the thickened portion of the heart muscle
will be shaved off. The surgery has been shown to result in very
excellent long-term outcome. And the surgery is well tolerated when done by experienced hands.
