Watch as Dr. Michael Breus discusses how sleep deprivation can affect one's immune system.
Hi, I'm Doctor Michael Bruce, the sleep doctor. Sleep deprivation can affect your immune system in several ways, but the biggest thing to understand here is that the more sleep deprived you're, the less likely you're to fight disease. That means low white blood cells count, low killer T-cell count, several different areas that you have to be extremely careful about, so the more sleep deprived you're, the more likely you're to catch a cold or if you're under current medical care, less likely the treatment is to work.
Michael J. Breus, PhD, is a clinical psychologist and a fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. He specializes in sleep disorders and is one of only 163 psychologists in the world with his credentials and distinction.
