Do the Symptoms of Depression Differ in Men and Women?

Read Transcript

The latest studies have shown that there is a difference between men and women when it comes to their symptoms and depression. Men happen to be much more irritable, they happen to act out more as far as anger, while women tend to cry a little bit more and tend to spend more time sleeping.

We believe this has a lot to do with the way that we socialize the sexes, in other words we socialize men to be much more aggressive and we socialize women to be much more quiet. What we tend to see in depression and the difference between the sexes, women are more likely to go to therapy and talk about what their issues are with regard to their emotions while men tend to be a lot more silent as a matter of fact, they may not engage in therapy as much and may act out more by perhaps abusing drugs and alcohol.
