What Causes Spider Veins?

Read Transcript

For first, spider veins are those tiny little vessels that maybe red or blue, that you see that will look like a road map on the legs. We tend to get them because veins don't pump the blood back, they just let the blood flow back towards the heart with little valves and over time those valves may not work and the blood pulls in those areas and as part of that you get these new vessels sprouting in those areas where there's pooling of blood.

The things that tend predispose people to this are hereditary factors. If you mum or dad had their varicose veins or spider veins, you're more likely to have them. Just because being a woman and having estrogen in your system makes them more likely and pregnancy particularly, if it's a very large baby is also going to predispose you because the large uterus and baby are locking the blood flow back to the heart.
