What Causes Spider Veins?

Read Transcript

Spider Veins are usually caused by what's called veinous insufficiency. A lot of people don't know this but Spider Veins and Varicose Veins are usually a symptom of veins deeper down in the leg or other parts of your body backing up. So, the way veins work is they have valves in them, they allow blood to move towards your heart because there's no heart in your feet pumping blood back.

So your muscle pumps blood back and a competent valve, or a well-working valve prevents it from leaking backwards again. When these veins get too large, the valves don't meet in the middle, blood backs up and they form Spider Veins and Varicose Veins. So, it's usually a symptom of deeper disease going on down below.
