Grapefruit has many health benefits, but it can also trigger drug interactions. In this Health Smarts video, Vonda Wright, MD, explains how grapefruit interacts with blood pressure drugs, statins, and other medications.
Hi, I'm Dr. Wright. If you're taking medication for your blood pressure, be careful about eating this food. Grapefruit. As healthy as it is, grapefruit and its juice don't play well with others. The chemical behind it tart test interacts with some blood pressure drags, especially betablockers and make them less effective.
Another chemical found in grapefruit boosts the effects of many drugs, including some blood pressure and anti-anxiety meds, atatins prescribed for cholesterol and erection enhancing drugs. That can cause a dangerous overdose. But if you love grapefruit, be sure to give your doctor a heads up. You may be able to switch to another drug that will allow you to feel better and enjoy your favorite fruit. Also ask your doctor if you can space your meds and grapefruit eight hours apart.
