SNAP is a program that shows kids how to include other kids by teaching empathy and compassion. In this video, HealthMaker, Matthew Certner, cofounder of SNAP (Special Needs Athletic Programs) talks about getting to the root cause of bullying.
The heart of it is that we wanted to show kids the kindness is cool, and that when you're in elementary school and middle school, the littlest things that you do can make a huge difference in these kids lives. If it's as small as sitting with them at lunch, or playing with them at recess, these are the things that we really want to instill on the lives of this children.
We're teaching them compassion and empathy not sympathy. We want them to include children. It's extremely important, it's a problem that we see, and it's a problem that's been reported throughout the nation and we really feel it's important to hit it at the root cause.
Matthew Certner is co-founder and CEO of SNAP, Inc. (Special Needs Athletic Programs). Certner is also the founder of SCSN NJ Disability Clinics and is currently developing SNAP’s first special needs school in Guatemala.
