What Is the Mission of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies?

Well let me put it really simply. We're a part of the national academies that were chartered by Abraham Lincoln in 1863 and we exist to advice the nation and as we like to say we have one job and that's to tell it like it is. And in Washington that means speaking truth to power to take various topics are of concern, interest controversy and to draw together experts and to reach consensus on recomendation how to move forward and to take us where the evidence leads us, and to not go beyond the evidence and to make sure that our recommendations are grounded in and as much science as possible.
