Tips to Stay Tick-Free to Prevent Lyme Disease

Read Transcript

Hi, Dr. Oz here. If you really want to be prepared for the summer season, make sure you study up on tick-borne diseases. Lyme disease is transmitted by ticks carrying the Borrelia bacteria. It can trigger symptoms like a nasty rash, arthritis, and mental dysfunction. Here's how to protect you and your family, including your pets.

Use insect repellants with DEET. The benefits of DEET far outweighs the risks, although the CDC does recommend that pregnant women and young children avoid DEET. Cover up. Wear long sleeves and pants tucked into your socks when in grassy or wooded areas. Shower when you get home, inspect your pets.

Ticks hidden in your pet's fur and hair can easily infect you and your Fluffy, or Fido. Follow these steps, and you'll enjoy safe tick-free summer. I'm Dr. Oz. For more ways to protect your family's health, watch all of our smart tips.
