If you have irritable bowel syndrome, you're all too familiar with the symptoms-- constipation, diarrhea, gas, and pain.
Hi, I'm Dr. Miller. Scientists don't really know what causes IBS. But there's a lot of research into understanding
this condition in order to come up with better treatment options. Here are some potential causes of IBS symptoms--
a poor connection between the brain and the gut. Your gut and brain communicate with each other, and cross signals can cause bowel problems.
Motor problems in the gastrointestinal tract. That's known as motility. Slower motility can lead to constipation
while faster motility can cause diarrhea. Mental health. There's a strong link between psychological problems
like depression or anxiety and bowel health. Experts think IBS symptoms may be a symptom of psychological stress in some people.
A bacterial infection. This is known as bacterial gastroenteritis. And in some people, it triggers IBS symptoms.
Fluctuating hormones. Younger women with IBS often have worse symptoms around their period. And postmenopausal women tend to have fewer symptoms than women
