Onions are bursting with great anti-oxidants, but you can get even more out of these alliums if you store them for several months, according to a recent study. That may boost their levels of cancer fighting, heart disease diminishing Quercetin by upto 30%. Thick skinned onions are the perfect pantry addition, those are your everyday yellow, red and white onions. Not only do they make a great addition to soups, salads and sandwiches, but they'll keep for several months in a cool, dry dark location. Just stash them in a mesh bag, nylon stocking or other container that allows the onions to breathe.

And use your nose to sniff up the best onions at the supermarket or farmer's market. The more pungent they are, the bigger their anti-oxidant punch, and red varieties tend to beat out the yellow ones when it comes to nutrition levels.
