To Improve Insulin Sensitivity, Reach for Lean Protein

Read Transcript

Hey, I'm Dr. Darria Long Gillespie. Do you feel hungry after exercise? Think about what you eat after a workout. Post-workout snacks can have a big impact on how your body uses insulin. Your best bet, refill with a handful of nuts. A little lean protein or some healthy bats can help make your body more insulin sensitive.

So you will absorb and lose blood sugar more effectively. In a recent small study, carbohydrate rich post-workout meals like pasta, red, chips and sweets seems to have a negative effect on exercisers, their muscle cells refilled quickly with a sugar-based fill called Glycogen which reduced their sensitivity to insulin.

That led researchers to conclude that post-workout meals may benefit from less carbohydrates, and more healthy fast and lean protein, so keep your favorite nuts on hand and nibble after you exercise. I'm doctor Darria. For more ways to nourish your health, check out all our smart tips.
