Hi, Dr. Miller here with a surprising tip to help you sleep better, go camping on your next vacation.
A new small study found that a week-long camping trip was enough to help people reset their circadian rhythms.
This happened for all the study participants regardless of whether they were early birds or night owls. The researchers noted that our exposure
to an abundance of artificial light has thrown many of us off a natural sleeping schedule. In this study, campers weren't allowed
to use flashlights or personal electronic devices. So they truly had to rely on nature's light signals.
As a result, they tended to awaken and go to sleep earlier than normal. Even if you can't get away for a camping trip,
the researchers have some other tips to help keep your circadian rhythms more in tune with the natural solar day.
Get more exposure to natural sunlight in the morning and mid-day. Dim the lights in the evening. That includes turning off the TV and powering down computers
and other electronic devices. The idea is to reduce artificial light as much as possible. I'm Dr. Miller.
